Reading  Around the world in a day!

Teaching aims:

1. To understand the passage and learn about the school trip to the World Park..

2. To describe the feeling of a trip by using proper words and phrases.

Teaching focuses:

1. learn about the general idea of the school trip.

2. learn the words and phrases used to describe the feeling of a trip.

Teaching procedures:

Step1. Daily greetings

Get a student to give his or her duty report. 

Step2. Present the teaching aims

Get the students to read the teaching aims by themselves.

Step3. Reading

Contest 1 of self study

Give the students a question: How did Linda feel about the visit to the World Park? Let the students scan the letter and get the information. Get one student to give the answer: She had a great time there. It was a great day but she didn’t enjoy it at the beginning.

Contest 2 of self study

Play the tape for the students. Make them finish Exercise C1 ( Tell true or false) on Page 43 by themselves as they listen to the tape. Get better students to correct the wrong answers and tell the reasons.

Contest 3 of self study

Get the students to read aloud the letter after the tape. Discuss the following questions in pairs:

1. Where did Linda go?

2. Who did she go with?

3. How long was the journey?

4. Did she enjoy it at the beginning?

5. What did she see from the coach when they arrived?

6. How many models of places of interest are there?

7. Which places of interest did they see?

8. What was the best part?

9. Where can Linda’s mother see the photos of the trip?

Get nine students to answer these questions. Then get them to do Exercise C2 ( Put the photos in the correct order.) on Page 43. The teacher gives some opinions if the students can’t work out these questions.

Contest 4 of self study

Divide the students into several groups of three. At the same time, divide the letter into three parts. Give each group one part and let them find out the adjectives, adverbs or phrases which describe the feelings of Linda during the school trip. 

Para. 1~2

Wonderful, interesting, great, did not enjoy, boring, felt sick

Para. 3~4

Very excited, did not feel sick, enjoy ourselves, wonderful

Para. 5~7

Couldn’t believe my eyes, wonderful, amazing, great

Give the winners something as a reward.

Contest 5 of self study

Encourage the students to describe the feelings of Linda by using the words and phrases in the table. Get the students to help each other to finish this exercise.

Step4. Relaxation

Enjoy some pictures of places of interest in the world.

Step5. Ask the students to go over all the contents of the letter find out if they have any other questions. Then discuss the questions raised by some students. Encourage the other students to help them to solve the puzzles.

Step6. Test

If there are no questions, test them with a test paper.

Exercises: 

Test 1: Retell the letter by using the following words and phrases:

Test2: Describe a place of interest you are interested in and familiar with by using the words and phrases we have learned in class.
